Probably my favorite place to eat whenever I get the chance, the Old Ebbitt Grill is a historic and iconic restaurant located in the heart of Washington, DC, just steps away from the White House and the National Mall. With a rich history dating back to 1856, the Old Ebbitt Grill has become a beloved institution in the city, known for its classic decor, extensive menu, and excellent service.
Atmosphere and Decor:
The first thing that strikes you upon entering the Old Ebbitt is its elegant and charming atmosphere. The restaurant is designed with dark wood paneling, antique fixtures, and cozy leather booths that create a warm and inviting ambiance. There is a large bar area that is always bustling with patrons, and several dining rooms that offer a more intimate setting.
The decor is classic and timeless, with photos, paintings, and artifacts that pay homage to the restaurant’s history and Washington DC. The walls are adorned with images of politicians, celebrities, and other notable figures who have visited the restaurant over the years. If you have a keen eye you can also find my pic adorning one of its walls. The Old Ebbitt Grill is a place where you feel like you are stepping back in time to a bygone era of American history.
Menu:
The menu at the Old Ebbitt Grill is extensive and features classic American fare, including seafood, steaks, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast. One of the most popular items is the Oyster Bar (definitely my favorite on a Wednesday evening), which offers a variety of fresh seafood options, including oysters, clams, and shrimp. The restaurant also offers a selection of daily specials that feature seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients.
One of the most notable features of the Old Ebbitt Grill’s menu is the variety of options available for all types of diners. Whether you are a meat lover, a seafood enthusiast, or a vegetarian, you are sure to find something that will please your palate. The restaurant also offers a wide selection of beer, wine, and cocktails to complement the meal.
The flavors are rich and satisfying, and the portions are generous. The menu is updated regularly to reflect seasonal changes and to incorporate new and innovative dishes.
Service:
The Old Ebbitt Grill is known for its excellent service, with a staff that is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. OEG is one of only a handful of places that I’ve never had a negative experience. The servers are well-versed in the menu and can offer recommendations based on your preferences. They are also quick to refill drinks and offer additional bread and butter. The staff is professional and accommodating, going out of their way to make diners feel welcome and comfortable.
The restaurant also offers private dining options and catering services for those who are looking to host a special event. The staff is experienced in handling large groups and events, and can work with you to create a customized menu that fits your needs and budget.

Location:
Located just steps away from the White House and other major landmarks in the city makes it a convenient spot for visitors to grab a meal or a drink after a day of sightseeing. The proximity to major government offices and institutions also makes it a popular destination for business meetings and events. In fact, I’d say with a little people watching this is a good place for sight seeing as well.
Even with its central location, the Old Ebbitt Grill maintains a sense of privacy and exclusivity. The restaurant is tucked away on a side street, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The interior is designed in a way that allows for a sense of intimacy, even in the midst of a busy dining room.
Price:
Despite its amazing location the price is quite reasonable (not accounting for any caviar indulgences of course). It is worth the cost for the quality of the food and the overall experience. The restaurant is a great option for special occasions, happy hour, breakfast, or business lunches.
