The Golden Light Cafe And Cantina

Set smack dab in the middle of the Texas Panhandle in the heart of old Route 66 is one of the best burger spots of all time, The Golden Light Cafe And Cantina in Amarillo, Texas.
Set amongst antique stores, at first glance the place looks like a rundown dive who’s glory days may have been in the Johnson Era. Let’s be honest though, that’s everything a good burger place should be. Worn out and crooked tables, pictures of faithful clientele thumbtacked to the wall, maybe some slightly uneven and creaky wooden floors, and a small counter in the middle where one can perch to have a view of it all.
Stepping in at lunch time and you never know who you may see. It could be area ranchers who came into town, you may see bankers and lawyers in tailored suits, or a soccer mom with a Tahoe full of kids in tow. Most likely you’ll see a combo of all of them.
In Business Since 1946
As far as the food goes it is easy to see why they have been in business in the same location since 1946. Yes, I said 1946 (with many of the original customers). With almost a dozen variations of burgers, patty melts and burritos, a person won’t be disappointed. ALL the portions are generous. And delicious. I’ve never had a burger there that wasn’t juicy or packed with flavor.
Though I’ve had the same order since my grandfather first started bringing me in the mid-1980’s (green chili cheeseburger, fries and a root beer) there is an occasion where I deviate from that. That time is when the green chili stew is available. To my knowledge though it’s a winter time only item. If it’s available I simply can’t recommend it enough.
The Cantina
The cantina portion of the Golden Light was opened next door in 1996 and since then has become a top live music venue in Amarillo. The Cantina features not only local talents but also many acts prevalent on the Texas Music scene. For better or worse I think a good chunk of my early and mid twenties were spent here.
One thing I can promise is that the next time you see me in Amarillo at lunch time, you’ll find me here at the counter. Come say hi!
