The Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas is one of the most historic and iconic hotels in the United States. Built in 1859 by German immigrant William Menger, the hotel has played a significant role in the history of San Antonio and the United States.
The Menger Hotel was originally built as a two-story adobe building, but it was expanded in 1876 to include three additional stories and a grand lobby. The hotel quickly became a popular destination for travelers and is known for its luxurious accommodations and excellent service.
One of the most significant events in the history of the Menger Hotel occurred in 1887 when President Theodore Roosevelt visited the hotel. Roosevelt, who was then the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, used the hotel’s bar as his headquarters during the planning of the Spanish-American War. It is said that Roosevelt created and recruited many of his Rough Riders from the bar and that the famous cowboy, “Buckey” O’Neill, was killed while leading a charge in the war.
The Menger Hotel has also played a significant role in the history of Texas, serving as the headquarters for the Texas Rangers in the late 1800s, and many of the most famous Rangers, including Captain Leander McNelly, stayed at the hotel. The hotel was also the site of the first meeting of the Texas State Bar Association in 1882.
Over the years, the Menger has undergone several renovations and expansions. In 1923, the hotel was extensively remodeled, and the original Victorian-style furnishings were replaced with a more modern decor. In 1962, the hotel was designated as a National Historic Landmark, recognizing its important place in American history.
Today, the Menger Hotel is a popular destination for travelers who want to experience the history and charm of San Antonio. The hotel features 316 guest rooms and suites, each with its own unique decor and furnishings. Not only a historic landmark, but also a culinary destination with multiple dining options, guests can enjoy everything from casual bites to fine dining experiences.
Menger Bar
The most famous of dining options is the Menger Bar, which has been serving classic cocktails for over a century. The bar is steeped in history, and it was even frequented by President Theodore Roosevelt during his time in San Antonio. The Menger Bar offers a variety of signature cocktails, including their famous Ramos Gin Fizz, as well as craft beers and wine. The bar also offers a menu of small bites, such as charcuterie boards and sliders.
Colonial Room Restaurant
For a more formal dining experience, the Colonial Room Restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant features a classic atmosphere with Victorian-style decor and chandeliers. The menu includes classic American dishes, such as steak and seafood, as well as Southern-inspired cuisine like chicken fried steak (highly recommended), as well as shrimp and grits. The restaurant also offers a daily lunch buffet and a popular Sunday brunch.
Menger Cafe
The Menger Hotel also has a coffee shop, the Menger Cafe, which offers a selection of pastries, sandwiches, and coffee drinks. The cafe is a popular spot for a quick breakfast or lunch, and guests can enjoy their meal on the hotel’s beautiful courtyard. For those who prefer to dine in their room, the Menger Hotel offers room service from the Colonial Room Restaurant. Guests can enjoy the same menu offerings from the comfort of their own room.
Alamo Plaza
One of my favorite things to look out and people watch over Alamo Plaza. For those not yet in the know, Alamo Plaza is another historic public space located in the heart of downtown San Antonio. It is perhaps best known for its association with the Battle of the Alamo, a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution, which took place in 1836.
The plaza is situated in front of the Alamo, the Spanish mission turned fortress that played a significant role in the struggle for Texas independence. The Alamo is now a museum and a popular tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors each year. In addition to the Alamo, Alamo Plaza is also home to a number of other important historic features: several monuments and statues, including the Cenotaph, a towering monument dedicated to the defenders of the Alamo.
Today, Alamo Plaza continues to serve as a vibrant public space in downtown San Antonio, hosting a variety of events and celebrations throughout the year. It is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment in the heart of the city.
The Menger Hotel has played an important role in the history of San Antonio and the United States, and it continues to be an important landmark today. Its rich history, luxurious accommodations, and central location make it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
