Last week I became admittedly smitten with a brand and a car I was relatively unfamiliar with. I had the opportunity to spend a week with the Genesis GV70. If you would like to read that review, please check out the April 2024 issue of The Woodlands Lifestyle Magazine. As much as I hated to turn in those keys, I was comforted in the notion that my follow-up vehicle for this week was its big brother, the Genesis GV80 3.5T Prestige. And…well…I have thoughts!
In a competitive realm dominated by established players like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the Genesis GV80 emerges as a formidable contender, poised to disrupt the status quo with its blend of elegance, performance, and customer-centric offerings. Positioned as the flagship luxury SUV under Hyundai’s upmarket sub-brand, the GV80 not only holds its own against its illustrious competitors but also sets a new standard for excellence in its class.
EXTERIOR
At first glance, the GV80 commands attention with its stately and aristocratic presence and striking design cues reminiscent of higher-priced luxury vehicles. From the G-matrix front grille to the sleek split LED headlights and bi-level illuminated side vents, every detail exudes sophistication and exclusivity. The Bentley-inspired elements further elevate its status, creating an aura of luxury that is unrivaled in its segment. Another favorite night time feature again was the illuminated Genesis logo to announce both your entrance and exit.
INTERIOR
Step inside, and the GV80 continues to impress with its meticulously crafted interior and attention to detail. Almost every square inch is covered in leather and alcantara . The combination of luxurious materials and Bentley-esque knurling on the switchgear evoke a sense of opulence typically reserved for premium marques.
As you sit behind the beautiful heated, power tilt leather steering wheel, there is a vibrant driver display that is configurable. When you hit the start button, you are greeted with terrific graphics from the dash. You also see a vibrant head-up display that shows your speed and has traffic sign recognition.
On the gauge cluster, when you turn on your blinker to change lanes, you get a camera view from the left or right side of the dash to make sure it is safe to change lanes. The head-up display also shows you if all is safe, and if you need more, the outside mirrors warn you and will beep at you. A vehicle in your blind spot is not a problem in the GV80. The center console is surrounded by real wood and houses a rotary shifter as well as drive modes featuring snow, eco, comfort, custom, and my favorite, Sport mode.
The spacious cabin offers seating for up to seven passengers in select configurations (the model I drove did not have the optional 3rd row seat), with ample headroom and luggage capacity to accommodate even the most discerning of travelers. The GV80 provides 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats and a maximum capacity of 84 cubic feet with those seats folded (power buttons to both raise and lower the seats are conveniently located in the rear next to the tailgate). These are great figures for any luxury midsize SUV.
The 2024 GV80 focuses more on providing a comfortable ride rather than a sporty one, suiting its dignified character. The suspension soaks up more bumps in the road than the GV70 did, resulting in an even more relaxing and smooth ride. The steering is responsive, and this Genesis feels planted when making turns.
It’s also very quiet. That’ll be down to the double glazing, and the noise canceling tech that works much the same way as your expensive pair of headphones. And it’s not anywhere near the only clever bit of tech. There’s also a front facing camera system that scans the road ahead and adjusts the electronically controlled dampers to prepare for each bump or pothole (we’ve seen similar from Mercedes).
The lane cantering and active cruise system also has an AI component. Even when it’s turned off it watches how sharply you make steering and speed corrections, and then aims to mimic you when you next turn it on. Meanwhile, terrain mode adjusts the four wheel and traction systems to help in any sticky situations. But let’s be honest, you won’t be taking this thing off-road.
Under the hood, the GV80 offers two engine options: a 300-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder (2.5T) and a 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6 (3.5T). The base four-cylinder provides a good amount of punch for both around-town and highway driving. The V6 is quieter and more refined, and it provides smooth acceleration, allowing the GV80 to dash from zero to hero in just under 6 seconds. Both power plants get the job done, but they’re not apt to blow you away. A smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard.
Whether cruising down the highway or navigating city streets, the GV80 offers a refined and exhilarating driving experience that rivals its European counterparts.
WARRANTY
But it’s not just about style; the GV80 delivers substance where it matters most. With a comprehensive five-year care package, including a warranty, scheduled servicing, roadside assistance, and over-the-air software updates, Genesis puts the customer first, ensuring peace of mind throughout ownership.
CONCLUSION
In terms of pricing, the GV80 proves to be a compelling value proposition, with a starting price of $64,600 for the Premium model and options for higher trim levels offering additional luxury features. As tested, this week’s example retails for $79,145. Despite its competitive pricing, the GV80 does not compromise on quality or amenities, making it a worthy competitor to its more established rivals.
With its bold design, luxurious interior, and customer-centric approach, the Genesis GV80 challenges the notion that luxury comes at a premium! By offering a compelling blend of style, performance, and value, the GV80 establishes itself as a true game-changer in the luxury SUV market, deserving of a place on every buyer’s shortlist. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the GV80 stands as a shining example of commitment to innovation and excellence in luxury motoring.
As another overall testament to Genesis and their products, in the 2 weeks I had with them I’ve referred two buyers their way with both becoming happy customers. Hey Genesis, should we make it a third consecutive week?
